The Dreadful Curse of Time on Our Dental Health

Posted .

One of the worst problems with aging is the effect it has on our bodies. As we age, so too do our limbs, organs, hair, and smile. We often think of teeth as being immune to the effects of age, but they will begin to wear down and deteriorate as we get older. Luckily, if you take good care of them and ensure they are always clean, they can last a lifetime.

One of the most important things you can do is to always practice safe and effective oral health habits. This includes brushing and flossing every day. The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice daily and flossing once daily. The tools you use to clean your teeth are just as vital. Look for a toothbrush that has soft bristles and can fit comfortably in your mouth. If you struggle to clean with your brush due to lack of energy or weaknesses with your muscles or bone, you should switch to an electric toothbrush. Likewise for flossing, for if you struggle, try using a water flosser instead.

Should you find yourself without a full set of teeth, you should consider a tooth replacement treatment such as dentures. Although dentures are artificial, they still need to be cared for. Every night your dentures, whether partial or complete dentures, should be removed and soaked in plain water or a dentist-approved cleaning solution. Leaving your dentures sitting out with make them dry out and crack and break.

As we get older, bad habits can have a greater negative effect on your body. This includes smoking and chewing tobacco and recreational drugs. To avoid all the oral health ailments and diseases that come with these bad habits, quit them as soon as possible.
